I receieved today a reply from carbon offsetting company, JP Morgan Climate Care. See my email and the response…Here is the email I originally sent on the 6th May…
I am looking to host a live music event in the next few weeks for around 100 guests as part of our Greener Bournemouth campaign. I was wondering how easy it would be to work out the carbon footprint to offset for this event, as it is very important that the gig be carbon neutral. Regards Tom Wood
Here is the response I just received from Climate Care…
Dear Tom,
Thank you for getting in touch about your Bournemouth event. We’d be happy to help you offset the emissions from this.
It’s fairly straightforward to calculate and offset events with us. We’ve devised an easy to use events calculator (which I’m attaching) which makes a number of assumptions (all explained in the attached). This allows you to calculate the approximate cost to offset the event.
Given the size of your event, depending on how much energy you intend to use at the event, it is worth noting that our minimum offset cost for events is £75 (or 10 tonnes before VAT) and an event for 100 people is likely to calculate at less that this. Therefore you may simply wish to make your calculation using the attached spreadsheet based on known data, and simply purchase the minimum £75 if the estimate is considerably less than that.
I would like to point out that we don’t actually advocate the use of the term ‘carbon neutral’ as it is very difficult to define, as well as being trademarked for use. You do open yourselves up to criticism with its use, so we recommend describing exactly what you have offset (i.e. “we have offset the emissions generated by this event”) rather than saying “we are carbon neutral”.
I hope this information is of use to you – let me know if you have any further questions.
Best wishes,
Eva
